Synopsis
Tosca is a political thriller, set in Rome. The action takes place over less than 24 hours, making it an intense experience!
The plot centres around three main characters – Rome’s diva Floria Tosca, her lover Mario Cavaradossi (a painter and republican) and the corrupt Chief of Police, Baron Scarpia. Scarpia has long lusted after Tosca, and when he suspects Cavaradossi of assisting an escaped political prisoner, seizes the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. He will manipulate Tosca into revealing the prisoner’s hiding place and Cavaradossi’s involvement, and have her for himself.
When Cavaradossi is captured, Scarpia offers Tosca a horrific bargain – she must give herself to Scarpia, or her lover is killed… what will she choose, and who will survive?

The scenic design establishes an atmosphere of impending doom, mirroring the church's red and gold architecture in Scarpia’s lavish filigree dining table. The production will employ dynamic projections and short films to transform the stage into a cinematic, ticking countdown. The colors and visuals create an inescapable psychological weight, emphasizing that time is running out for the characters.
Set in a timeless, early 20th-century Art Nouveau aesthetic, costume designer Sarina Textor will be working with stage director Alice Wiley-Picket on a costume design that relies on a striking, symbolic color palette to define the character dynamics. Cavaradossi wears pure white to represent his artistic idealism, while Tosca appears in passionate, tragic red flowers and gowns. In stark contrast, Scarpia is draped in oppressive gold filigree, wearing heavily decorated garments and carrying a signature gold cane to manifest his corrupt power.
